GEM OF THE MONTH: The Pearl
"The kingdom of heaven is like a pearl merchant on the
lookout for choice pearls.
He discovered a real bargain --a pearl of great value-
And sold everything he owned to purchase it."
Matthew 13:45
Throughout ancient and biblical times,
the pearl was considered a highly valuable precious substance.
The Romans associated pearls with Venus as well as the Greek counterpart
with Aphrodite, the "Lady of the pearls" who rose from
the waters. The pearl was also believed to be formed by lighting
penetrating the oyster, hence the idea of the joining of fire
and water, representing birth and fertility. It is often referred
as the "queen gem", the symbol of innocence, perfection,
and purity.

What beautiful symbolism
for those born in June! To have such a mysterious and sensual
gem represent your birth month is absolutely enlightening.
Whether they are natural or cultured, saltwater or freshwater
pearls, the "genesis" of |
| each
pearl is divine and rewarding as the desire of owning and
wearing them. It is nature's gift to mankind. It is a "living"
gift created by a mollusk, no less.
Unlike other gems, they need
no cutting. No polishing. They are accepted and appreciated
just they way they are born. A living treasure. It is no
wonder that the ancients' passion for pearls has transcended
time. It will be of no wonder that it will continue to do
so.
